Songs of Travel

The wonderful talent of the UK 2023-2024 VOCES8 Scholars is on show in this concert of two parts. They perform a selection of pieces from the Milton Abbey International Summer School with repertoire ranging from Thomas Tallis to Nat King Cole and then move to the VOCES8 Centre to give a very special performance of the Songs of Travel by Ralph Vaughan Willliams, accompanied by pianist Ralf Schnell. Most often performed by a single baritone soloist with piano, in this performance each scholar will perform one of the songs from the set as a solo, giving us the rare opportunity to hear different interpretations from both upper and lower voices as the set unfurls. Composed at the start of the 20th century with text by Robert Louis Stephenson these songs may put us in mind of Schubert’s ‘journey’ song cycles but they have an unmistakably British tinge.
