The Final Sacrifice

Praised be the God alone, Who hath made of two folds one.” - George Herbert

Step into the sanctuary of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Houston and join VOCES8 with organist Jim Roman for a ravishing concert from their 2024 Spring USA Tour. This carefully crafted programme weaves a radiant tapestry of English and German music from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Parry’s royal anthem I Was Glad is a rousing hymn of praise and the harmonies of Charles Wood’s Hail Gladdening Light resonate like sunbeams permeating stained glass, but many of the pieces in the programme are imbued with reflective texts that give comfort and hope. Felix Mendelssohn’s famous choral prayer I Waited for the Lord sits alongside Brahms’s Geistlicheslied, whose glorious Amen is perhaps only trumped by the Amen that closes Gerald Finzi’s Lo, the full, final sacrifice.

The concert includes guest appearances from the VOCES8 US Scholars and from Lyyra - the Foundation’s new all-female ensemble - making their debut performance, plus a world premiere by Taylor Scott Davis.
